The 18-ton vehicle was driving down Warren Lane, near Beaulieu, when the accident occurred on Wednesday.

Firefighters from four fire stations – Beaulieu, Leamington, Redbridge and Romsey – were dispatched to the scene.

A spokesman for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) said: “They were alerted to a fuel truck that had run off the road, turned on its side and began to leak diesel fuel.

“The driver, who suffered a hand injury, was treated by firefighters, after which he was taken to the hospital.

“Special equipment was used to repair the leak and clean up the spill.

“The incident was reported to the rescue team before HIWFRS returned to the scene at 16:30.”

Warrens Lane is a winding route that leads from St. Leonard’s to Nudes Rood Point, which overlooks the Solent.
